A technical lead for your business, by the hour or by the month.
You have a website, a store or a product and nobody senior to own the technical decisions. I can be that person without the hire.
When this fits
- You have to choose a platform or a vendorWordPress, Shopify or custom. This agency or that one. I spent years writing those proposals, so I know what they leave out.
- A project stalled or went overI read the code and the contract, tell you where it stands, and either get it over the line or plan the handover.
- You cannot evaluate your developerA review of the work, the process and the invoices, in plain language, so you know whether you are getting what you pay for.
- Nobody understands the codebaseAn audit that produces a map: what it does, where it is fragile, what it would cost to fix or replace.
- Your team needs standards and reviewCoding standards, code review, a starter framework and the habits that keep a team consistent. I have done this for a web team as its technical lead.
What I do
- Fixed-scope audits of a site, a store, a codebase or a vendor, with findings you can act on
- Architecture and build plans before anyone writes code
- Vendor and proposal review, and help running the selection
- Code review and standards for your in-house or agency developers
- Rescue and handover of stalled projects
- A fractional technical lead on a monthly retainer: your senior technical person, without the hire
Work I have done
- Led a web team as director of web technology and security at a Minneapolis agency
- Scoped and architected the agency's larger engagements from feasibility through system design
- Set the coding standards and built the starter framework the team used on every build
- Served as the technical resource for UX, strategy, SEO and development teams
How it works
Most engagements start with a fixed-scope audit, so you get something useful whether or not we continue. After that it is hourly for advice and review, or a monthly retainer when you want a technical lead in the room every week.

Questions
Do you need to build it to advise on it?
No. Advice and build are separate engagements. If you want me to build what I recommended, that is a new proposal you can take elsewhere.
Can you work with our existing agency?
Yes. Often the most useful thing I do is translate between a business and its developers.
What does a fractional technical lead cost?
A set number of hours a month at a monthly rate, agreed in the proposal. It is a fraction of a senior hire and you can stop when you no longer need it.
